Cosmetic pads with 3D effect

Embroidery is a great way to make your projects even more individual and give them that certain something. From appliqués and flat patterns to impressive three-dimensional objects – embroidery is creativity.

In our last article, we showed you how you can sew reusable cosmetic pads from used textiles. Inspired by this, @maedebykasia provided us with an embroidery file that can be used to add cool 3D effects to the cosmetic pads. You can easily make them in the embroidery hoop, i.e. ITH ("In the Hoop").

With her step-by-step instructions, the embroidery process is as easy as with any other embroidery. You just have to make sure you use the right materials and follow the embroidery instructions exactly.

What you'll need

 
 

  • Embroidery machine with a 10 cm x 10 cm embroidery hoop
  • Different embroidery threads in your favorite colors
  • Embroidery stabilizer: Avalon Ultra by Madeira or Super Solvy by Sulky
  • Upper material: woven cotton, terry cloth or microfiber terry cloth
  • Lower material: terry cloth, microfiber terry cloth
  • Spray adhesive
  • 3D embroidery foam, 3 mm thick, white (Bodybuilder by Madeira or Puffy by Sulky)
  • Appliqué scissors
  • SCHMETZ Black Super Universal Needle in size 80 or SCHMETZ Gold Embroidery Needle in size 75

Let's get started!

 
STEP 1

Hoop the same thread color at the top and bottom with two layers of embroidery stabilizer and embroider the first color – this is the placement line.
STEP 2

Use the spray adhesive to glue a piece of embroidery foam along the outlines of the heart and embroider the next color. This sequence uses very short stitches that perforate the foam.
STEP 3

Remove the foam that is not needed so that only the heart remains on the embroidery stabilizer.
STEP 4

Place or glue on a piece of the upper material and embroider the next color. This attaches the material to the stabilizer.
STEP 5

Remove the embroidery hoop from the machine but leave the project in the hoop. Glue a piece of terry cloth to the reverse side and embroider the next color.
STEP 6

Remove the hoop (project remains in the hoop) and use the appliqué scissors to cut back both materials (upper material and lower material) very closely.
STEP 7

Embroider the last color for a beautiful and neat outline.
STEP 8

Break the cosmetic pad out of the embroidery stabilizer. The pads must be washed before use to remove the water-soluble stabilizer film.
